This is an superbly preserved, first-quality representative of the Bakhtiari tribe’s most cherished carpet pattern. The Garden Compartment design is centuries old, originally reflecting the royal Safavid Garden design where each area divided by waterways was dedicated to a particular plant. By the end of the 19th century, only occasional examples emerged in different rug styles, except the Bakhtiari weavers who found in its format a fountain of inspiration. Here, in their traditional richly colored palette, willow, fruit, and starflower trees mingle with more fanciful “boteh bushes” and garden archways. Its great variety of motifs is rare and dexterous accomplished. Its very fine knotting referred to by the Bakhtiaris as “Bibibaff” or “Grandmother’s Weave” is notable and its condition superb.
