It is a stellar example from the golden age of ‘Manchester’ Kashan weaving at the turn of the century when enterprising merchants in Kashan imported finely spun wool from the textile mills of Victorian Britain that was intended for weaving the finest cloaks and robes and instead used it in their carpet workshops. As a result no carpets in the world - apart from the Pashmina wonders of 17th century Mughal India - have a shinier and softer pile than these Manchester Kashan masterpieces. Most of them obviously are of small size and the vast majority of this limited group are of traditional medallion design. Hence the unbelievable attraction of this room size landscape stunner. The lush woodlands and forests, the dense foliage of the trees and the flowers, the allure of the natural world on majestic display. Factor in the truly unreal color combination of creamy field with pinkish border with dollops of soft blue. I really love this old Kashan. It has a fabulous design, rich and lush with Garden of Eden imagery, with attractive coloration reliant on neutral earthy tones. The size is very handy and useful, and the condition is perfect. It’s signed by the master weaver in each of the 4 corners. This directional style may well be my favourite of all Kashan styles. One of my personal favourite discoveries of the year is one of the most classical of all rugs in my collection. A mint condition and first generation Kork Kashan woven with lustrous lambswool and glowing vegetable dyes. Yes, it’s classical to the point of being a textbook example of a fine Persian carpet. But that would be missing the point. This is one of the OG’s, a prime influencer copied by hundreds of thousands of other rugs in the century that followed it. And it brings amazing pleasure and packs tremendous value. The quality of materials and weave is stunning. Velvet. The radiance of the dyes is breathtaking. Especially set against the deeply saturated indigo field. The elegance of design is confident and rich all over. The drawing of the Saz leaves and Lotus flowers is sublime. There’s just so much pleasure and beauty seeping out of this piece of art and history. Like all of my gallery collection, it’s part of the 10 year anniversary sale.
