Within interlocking stepped medallions, jewel-shaped pendants grow to the vertical corners of the diamond chain as though pushing them into shape. There, and in the lapis blue field, opposingly postured wild fowl (known as 'murghi' working tirelessly to feed their young) vie for precedence amidst a diverse landscape of apotropaic elements scattered across the field designed to bestow good fortune upon whoever possesses it. Whirling pinwheel florets, tiny S-shaped cloudbands, sprouting boteh (Seeds of Life), and other spontaneous ornaments make up the panoply of tertiary motifs that give this rug its power. This Persian rug is in the categories of Persian Rug (Persian Carpet), Khamseh Persian Rug (Khamseh Persian Carpet) and Antique Persian Rug (Antique Persian Carpet), and it has been introduced and provided by Hadi Maktabi Gallery. Antique Khamseh bird rugs are among my tribal favourites. They’re fun, they’re quirky, and they’re always unpredictably full of surprises and indelible charm. Like this. Most are either small sized or long and narrow. This is only the second 3 x 2 meter one I’ve had (the other sold last year and is in a beautiful north California home). It’s the ideal size in my opinion, perfect for interiors and with the most sought after proportions. It’s also the rarest and hardest to find. Bird rugs are called Morghy, referring to the peacocks hopping and bopping all around the carpet. Fun and exciting! 300 x 215 Circa 1900 Perfect condition Full pile & kilim ends

ARAB KHAMSEH, Southwest Persian 4' 9" x 5' 9"145cm x 175cm,,Circa 1850 This eminently high-collectible jewel from the Arab sub-tribe of the South Persian Khamseh Confederation expresses an unreserved animation of its single weaver-dyer, brilliantly executing the difficult large medallion format of her tribe's signature design. A balanced, yet organically drawn lobed medallion is bursting with resplendent, overscale blossoms. No less compelling is the spacious, abashed main border. with a fancifully rendered “fence” pattern. What seems to be a riot of color is actually a precisely measured and combined palette of earthy tonalities and radiant blues, illumined by a superior grade of lustrous wool. In exceptional condition at well over one and one half centuries of age, this intensely personal 19th century antique rug exemplifies the very best artistry and craftsmanship from this tradition.
