“CYPRESS TREE” We find and acquire noteworthy Dorasht rugs and carpets from time to time as 19th century specimens are seldom encountered. This very original and finely woven Dorasht hails from the easternmost Persian Khorassanian provinces that share an unbroken Court-centric weaving legacy since 16th century Safavid times. It offers the “Tree of Life” theme, picturing the seldom-portrayed cypress tree motif as the centerpiece of the rug. Surrounded by avian and horned creatures, this statuesque conifer with a miniature version as its nucleus, energizes the botanical extravaganza inside and on the carnelian reserve. Spotted ibex-like creatures portrayed in a flying gallop flank it, while two mythical animals, half lion and half deer strut underneath the unfurled branches. At its very top, camouflaged cerulean parrots solemnly tend to the great cypress as an act of piety while a half dozen, ornately-striped avian inhabitants roost among the foliage. Canine companions that conjure the Latin phrase ‘cave canem’ (Beware the dog!) in the upper spandrels are tethered to the scalloped archway as if guarding the doorway to this phantasmagorical landscape. Woven crystal clarity, the suite of seven borders reflects the admirable craftsmanship of this style that has beguiled centuries of rug lovers. It is all the more enticing with its extraordinary heavy pile.
