This enchanting “story carpet” presents a masterful rendition of the beloved “Garden Compartment” design of the Central Persian Bakhtiari tribe. Its many individually decorated compartments evoke a great variety of botanical scenes drawn in exquisite detail. Although woven over a century ago, like the great majority of our turn of the 20th-century rugs, it offers heavy pile and will be extremely forgiving of heavy floor use. Its contrasting ivory main border brings a fresh, non-traditional color combination to this resplendent folk art antique carpet. This piece from the Persian Court tradition offers a symphony of beautifully-combined colors that fill highly faceted blossoms of great variety. In each quadrant, differing scales and structures of the flowerheads are infinitely beguiling! The medallion itself is specially conceived, its interior less defined by concentric layers than typical, revealing instead a single azure blue center supporting attendant palmettes. The border emphasizes expertly rendered rose petals reflecting the European shading technique that intermix inventively with delicate traditional Persian silk floral designs. This piece with its hard-to-find small room size dimensions is in very good condition and offers an equally rare level of formal ambiance. Final review! In the purchase phase! Persian Rug, Heriz Persian Rug

Persian Carpet Collection

This strongly desirable carpet radiates a winning folk art drama through a combination of skillful draftsmanship and soothing 20th-century colors. Its intriguing primitive quality harkens to earlier Serapi patterns with a spontaneous exuberance highly prized in this ancient village style. Its commanding medallion begins with a square centerpiece surrounded by an “animal skin” motif (local folklore holds that the earliest “Serapi” carpets had actual tanned leather hides as “medallions”). This is further enveloped by eight overscale petals adorned with abstract botanical elements. Trefoilesque fan pendants extend along the central axis to sweep alongside a network of budding vinery that spreads like a roadmap between the floral forms revealing ingenious asymmetries. Great swaths of skillfully applied color fluxes called abrash imbue the organically derived hues with an arresting beauty that has become more significant and mellowed with time. A gently patinated surface of a highly durable medium-height pile exposes the glistening quality of the oily mountain wool used in the construction of this handsome carpet. Final review! Persian Rug, Dorokhsh Persian Rug, Antique Persian Rug

“CYPRESS TREE” We find and acquire noteworthy Dorasht rugs and carpets from time to time as 19th century specimens are seldom encountered. This very original and finely woven Dorasht hails from the easternmost Persian Khorassanian provinces that share an unbroken Court-centric weaving legacy since 16th century Safavid times. It offers the “Tree of Life” theme, picturing the seldom-portrayed cypress tree motif as the centerpiece of the rug. Surrounded by avian and horned creatures, this statuesque conifer with a miniature version as its nucleus, energizes the botanical extravaganza inside and on the carnelian reserve. Spotted ibex-like creatures portrayed in a flying gallop flank it, while two mythical animals, half lion and half deer strut underneath the unfurled branches. At its very top, camouflaged cerulean parrots solemnly tend to the great cypress as an act of piety while a half dozen, ornately-striped avian inhabitants roost among the foliage. Canine companions that conjure the Latin phrase ‘cave canem’ (Beware the dog!) in the upper spandrels are tethered to the scalloped archway as if guarding the doorway to this phantasmagorical landscape. Woven crystal clarity, the suite of seven borders reflects the admirable craftsmanship of this style that has beguiled centuries of rug lovers. It is all the more enticing with its extraordinary heavy pile. 4’ 6” x 6’ 2” 137cm x 188cm Late 19th Century
