Persian Rug, Nomadic Persian Rug, Bakhtiari Persian Rug, Antique Persian Rug

Persian Carpet Collection

BAKHTIARI This is an superbly preserved, 145-year-old first-quality representative of the Bakhtiari tribe’s most cherished carpet pattern. The Garden Compartment design is centuries old, originally reflecting the royal Safavid Garden design where each area divided by waterways was dedicated to a particular plant. By the end of the 19th century, only occasional examples emerged in different rug styles, except the Bakhtiari weavers who found in its format a fountain of inspiration. Here, in their traditional richly colored palette, willow, fruit, and starflower trees mingle with more fanciful “boteh bushes” and garden archways. Its great variety of motifs is rare and dexterous accomplished. Its very fine knotting referred to by the Bakhtiaris as “Bibibaff” or “Grandmother’s Weave” is notable and its condition superb. 10' 9" x 14' 2" 328 cm x 432 cm Circa 1875

A SILK-SOUF TEHRAN CARPET This century-and-a-half-old Tehran "Garden of Paradise” rug is an astonishing window that gives the viewer a front-row seat to a kinetic illustration of nature in motion. Flower-studded branches house exotic birds, including a dedicated mating pair successfully defending their nest. At the right, a delightfully rendered, fully maned lion roars, startling forest deer that quickly exit stage left. A leopard sneaks toward another lion’s successful hunt, but the cautious cat is alert and has become wary. A full spectrum of richly brewed hues goes above and beyond in this untamed drama and invests this rug with the enlivening glow of now-lost color recipes. Every motif of this dynamo rug is imbued with an expertly conceived dimensionality thorugh abrash textures. Within each panel of the border, a new scene unfolds. Gazelle couples nuzzle one another beneath the blooming boughs while a proud mother hen observes her chicks eagerly pecking at the earth. The condition is magnificent, with copious fringe remaining. Persian Rug, Soltan Abad Persian Rug, Antique Persian Rug

Persian Carpet Collection

SULTANABAD Treasured for their often imaginative, even whimsical sophisticated visual rapport, the most artistic, innovative 19th-century Sultanabad carpets have now become virtually impossible to find. This is especially so with carpets possessing unusually wide, oversize dimensions. A ravishingly innovative, very early example, this stellar nearly 14x18 carpet offers a grand vision of asymmetrically oriented overscale elements coupled with spontaneous diminutive artistry that is a constant visual treat to behold. Two intentionally irregularly positioned, blazing floral medallions command attention against a ground like a rippled sapphire pool, with a third slipping slowly downward “off frame.” This sense of movement conceptually reifies that we are only witnessing a small window into a greater infinite spectacle. A wide coral-toned border further showcases an extraordinary palette of difficult-to-dye tropical hues. Resale Right: No! 13' 7" x 17' 7" 414cm x 536cm 3rd Quarter, 19th Century

DABIR KASHAN A tour-de-force of Oriental rug designing, this imaginative turn-of-the-20th century Vase rug is a best-of-the-best example of the Kashan city tradition at that time. Presenting a paradisiacal series of tableaus, the complexity of this finely woven patterning is astonishing, as is its perfect rendering of it by an uber-attentive Kashan weaver. The field design is broken into three tiers. The lowest section reveals a grand vase holding a lush bouquet of zinnias and other elaborate flowers, flanked by smaller pots where golden birds sit atop scarlet pansy-like blossoms. The middle zone includes a framed picture of long-legged waterfowl, while under the scalloped archway of the third portion, another vase with birds is articulated. Above it, a mountain scene with deer completes the visual journey. The repetition of the main border’s fanciful, highly decorative patterning skillfully balances the complexity of the field.
