TABRIZ This beautifully designed, superbly crafted 145-year-old Tabriz evokes a quiet grandeur that emanates from the double-layered teardrop medallion across the softly undulating salmon field to ivory spandrels echoing the graceful lines at the center. Two different overscale blossoms alternate compactly in the main border, giving this piece an ornate frame while featuring the gracious palette of hues from cinnabar and teak to citrine, teal, and pippin, as well as periwinkle and touches of mandarin. The movement of the organically drawn green arabesques in the central medallion are faintly mirrored in the field's narrow vinery and more visibly in corner pieces, together effecting a dexterously wrought, graceful, dancelike ambiance. This luxuriant area-size Isfahan inherits a pedigree of craftsmanship and artistic sensitivity that were informed by a long history of regal workshops of the Safavid dynasty in this 16th century capital city. With a knot density of over 300 kpsi, and lamb’s wool surface radiating an enchanting luster, its lush patterning appears to circulate around the sophisticated center medallion. The mind-boggling field contains detailed cloudbands and numerous exotic birds within foliage in various postures. The signature Isfahan colors are here radiantly rendered with powder, sky, and ice blues in harmonious interplay with rich carnelian reds and deeper-hued cobalt. A stunningly symmetrical, large scale, geometric eight pointed flower head medallion sits at the center of this room sized, high decorative Serapi Heriz carpet. The anchor pendants fastened at the top and bottom are connected to the rectilinear vine work adorning the hexagonal field, flush with an inconspicuous abrash (artistic color striation) lost on the casual observer. Angular and remarkably symmetrical vine work continues in the corner spandrels of this antique Heriz, a hallmark of the genre and an attractive incentive for interior decorators and connoisseurs.
