This 145-year-old Sultanabad exudes serenity by offering a delightfully contoured drawing style of overscale classical palmettes, fronds, and flowerheads infused by masterfully juxtaposed color palette. The pattern is unusually well-spaced in a very artful fashion. Another part of the allure of this over-century-old piece is in the vast range of scale explored in flowers of so many sizes both within the field and borders. Welcome variations in the exactitude of forms that mirror one another in this pattern appeal to the subliminal mind so that each appears as if moved by a gentle breeze. An inviting array of warm tones includes sunset reds, jade greens, brilliant blues, and softened saffron yellows. The sandstone backdrop and luxe botanical elements feature slightly differing tonal values due to the subtle and deliberate use of abrash, infusing the pattern with light and shade. Notice how the darkest striations in the lower half of the field add immensely to the depth and visual interest, as the artist wanted to create a textile that would never bore the onlooker. This distinctive antique Sultanabad carpet comes to us in very good condition with even, medium pile throughout. 14' 1" x 22' 0" 429 cm x 671 cm Circa 1875

Persian Rug, Kashan Persian Rug, Antique Persian Rug

Persian Carpet Collection

From an elite class of the broad pantheon of Persian rugs and extremely finely knotted of silky wool, this Mohtasham Kashan is instantly recognizable from the nimble handling of ethereal, early soft pastels alongside saturated gem tones greatly intensifying its impact. With purposefully bold dark coral streaks, a color-shifting carnelian reserve reflects a daring artistic proclivity from another time. These more potent shades are paired with an elegantly faceted elliptical medallion and elongated corner spandrels of luminous parchment. The fluidly scrolling, finely outlined vinery glazed in exquisite celadon and pale gold blush, each drawn with extraordinary finesse, ensures the negative space integral to the composition. With the midnight tulip and rosette main border as a counterpoint, a remarkable visual symphony is completed. Signs of heavier use in the upper field brings to this dynamic piece an extremely advantageous price. “Design Name Joshaghan” 7' 0" x 11' 1" “77,5” 213cm x 338cm Circa 1900

The most revered floral weaving style that emerged from the city of Tabriz in the 19th century, Tabriz rugs also exclusively employed the center medallion and corner piece format, with only a fraction presenting overall designs. This landmark, remarkably well-preserved over 180-year-old piece reveals a masterful command of a far less encountered multi-medallion approach, infusing fresh creativity that is seamlessly executed with consummate craftsmanship and aesthetic nuance. Presenting a stunning abundance of regal red tones only very rarely encountered in such profusion in a Tabriz carpet, the notably open reserve demonstrates astonishing dexterous abrash that transitions from soft terracotta to striking garnet and ruby red as it ascends. Twelve antique ivory medallions, each with its own slightly modified outline and internal pattern, are artfully juxtaposed by equally engaging cobalt Red rosettes. An exquisitely regal showpiece as either wall art or on the floor, this painterly exemplar of the cherished YAZD weaving group exhibits a consummate refinement and compositional mastery. Like an ornate honey-gold courtyard fountain viewed from the air, glittering shades of cornflower spill from the Rococo medallion into meandering waterways that irrigate a profusion of crystalline garden blooms across a luxuriant garnet toned reserve. Obviously woven by a woman with a profound mastery of color, its primary border of lyrically drawn lotus and peony flowers are swathed in continually color-changing braided vinery, in rich shades of blue from a deep royal to rich cerulean, highlighted by olive, peach hues, and sparingly used pear green. Exceptionally fine of weave with heavier pile, this astonishingly well-preserved rug is illumined by the lanolin-rich lamb’s wool so essential to achieve the greatest heights of Persian weaving. TEHRAN This entrancing Ivory Tehran Silk carpet achieves a sumptuous contemporary allure through a graphic, botanical format and unfolding virtuoso color drama. Its expert managing of the stylized, multi-scale design with its bountiful floral elements and spectrum of exotic, perfectly harmonized hues reflects this "Town" Persian rug type at its most triumphant. A serene, softly gold-tinged ivory field energizes the silken "canvas," presenting bustling arrays of unique polychrome blossoms and tendrils that create different organic shapes out of the negative space. A great sense of expansive movement is present as the design proceeds "off frame" behind the borders. This artistic technique conveys the pattern as eternally perpetuating into infinite space. The intentional offsetting of the field pattern is another technique that adds animation. Find any point within the field design and note where it appears again in the rug to appreciate the adroit command of the hidden repetition. Exemplified in this piece is the broad palette of sublime mid-tones that is this style's artistic hallmark, seen most often in the oldest Tehran's . This attribute and the infrastructure to weave very large rugs established Tehran's popularity in European and American markets.
