Vintage Persian Tabriz rug with a magnificent display of larger than life botanicals on a euphoric cerulean blue ground. Carpets with similar designs originated in 16th and 17th Safavid Dynasty Persian workshops and became highly sought after for their bold elegance and vivid colors. In fact, an original “Sickle Leaf Vase Technique” design carpet sold at Sotheby’s Auction in 2013 for just under $34 million as shown in our photo #11. Our mid twentieth century rendition embodies the spirit and flair of those original masterpieces. The design appears to have its origins in the harshang motif of shield shaped blossom palmettes. I love the implied symmetry, but freedom of scale in the elements.
