Featured Antique Carpet of the Day An antique West Central Persian Ferahan Rug 15' 7" x 20' 2" — Circa 1875. (High-Collectible) Created during the heyday of the Second Golden Age of Persian Weaving, this exquisite palace size carpet was most certainly woven on commission. Only one of the finest workshops in the centuries-old large town of Ferahan, renowned for its finely woven splendid carpets, could have achieved this major project for a patron. A large rug completely one-of-a-kind in its design and color, it technically exemplifies the best work from the region. With its intricate pattern of cascading boughs and encircled palmettes, it has no precedent. A close up look at this carpet reveals a multitude of motifs, each without duplication, but a variation on the theme. An unfathomable number of saffron stamens would have been needed to create its primary, very rare golden hue that in the hands of a master dyer became a spectrum of subtle gradations. This extraordinary early carpet is an exceedingly precious example of one of the most revered Persian weaving traditions, called "Guli Farang", that incorporating a cabbage rose motif into a fascinating, complex overall design. Floating in an astoundingly innovative, spacious allover latticework, each cluster of blossoms and leaves is uniquely and naturalistically crafted, reflecting a commitment to the challenge of weaving a spectrum of garden species. Light beige or parchment fields are extremely unusual for a Bijar—we have seen only a handful in our three decades of business. This magnificent connoisseur-caliber Bijar surrounds this eminently desirable attribute with a tour de force exposition of the most luxurious blues imaginable, juxtaposing deep indigo with a profusion of aquamarine, sky blue and sapphire in spacious cornerpieces and pinpoint details. Laden with archaic split palmette motifs, singularly amorphic organic outlines and compressed anchor pendants much shorter than usual, the brilliant medallion is much more innovative than the traditional diamond format typically seen. Abrash color striation and intricate Herati patterning are used with dexterity and sensitivity to add continual movement and visual interest throughout the carpet’s full expanse. The design is exceptionally unique, seemingly inspired by 16th century Safavid allover patterning rather than the medallion format of antique Persian court carpets.
