The sheer visual impact of this stately Serapi exemplifies the powerful artistry of this unique weaving tradition. At the center of this skillfully imagined 19th-century carpet is a stunningly symmetrical, large-scale, geometric eight-pointed flower head medallion. The anchor pendants fastened at the top and bottom are connected to the rectilinear vine work adorning the multifaceted hexagonal field, flush with an inconspicuous abrash (artistic color striation) lost on the casual observer. Buoyant azure blues, sea greens, and striated carnelian colors, the result of skillfully brewed dyes using indigo and madder, fill the fields, The highlighting effect of various well-juxtaposed hues supports a panoply of utterly charming, classically drawn elemental leaves and flower heads. Spontaneous flashes of asymmetry abound, a trait said to breathe life into the rug traditionally. The fluid beauty of sculpted flower and vine work continues in the successive corner spandrels. Clearly articulated, grand escutcheon palmettes and floral patterns fill out the surrounding indigo border, echoing the hues found in the central canvas and providing a harmonious glow. It offers a tremendous level of refinement, with the overall floral motifs becoming an expansive dreamlike structure drifting through the gently rippled “pool” like a technicolor oceanic forest. Feather and fan-shaped fronds emanate from vase-like botanical structures at the top and bottom of the field, becoming an exuberant exploration of myriad floral types rendered with masterful exactitude and majestic symmetry. Chiseled, realistic floral designs bejewel the field’s perimeter with surprising blossom sprays and bouquets that beg the passerby to become enchanted by the artistic chemistry. The viewer falls under its spell and is immediately transported away from the cares of the world. Every element glows with expressive, potently euphoric color juxtapositions of black cherry, jungle green, metallic sapphire, illumined rose, and cinnabar with expertly applied chiaroscuro shading every form to create a sublime, one-of-a-kind example of textural art manifested upon the loom by a master weaver long ago. This incredibly robust antique Serapi is in the rarely encountered area-size format. It displays a unique level of innovation that expertly balances both color and design. Its bold proportions and harmonious natural palette exemplify the aesthetic of this prized village weaving genre. A graceful eight-pointed rosette sits at the center of a majestic large medallion, reaching out to fill this saturated indigo space with multihued floral vinery. Its color palette is rare and profoundly beautiful. A generous field of rarely encountered cornflower blue features richly colored foliage, while ample linked corner pieces accommodate similar displays that include golden stylized fronds. Each motif is carefully drawn according to a well-spaced overall plan that allows for spontaneous individual detail. An unusually wide main border, grounded in unique burnished gold, is devoted to overscale cartouche motifs connected by elaborate geometric vinery. This pattern continues uninterrupted through each of the carpet's four sides. Intricate minor borders contain equally colorful small-scale patterning in a smoothly flowing arrangement. This nearly 10 x 13 antique village carpet from the perennially beloved Serapi tradition is in superb pile condition and combines its classic faceted medallion and corner-piece format. A folkloric quality that expresses the Serapi character is on full display. Its central kaleidoscopic design is essentially three medallions in one overscale composition that commands the parchment-toned reserve supporting overscale flame pendants. Even "symmetrically" paired floral elements on either side of the carpet's centerline are individual artistic expressions, where no two flowers or leaves are drawn in the same way. This ingenious spirit of subtle fluidity is multiplied by the rug's color-shifting sunset reds, corals and its apricot, gold, and boldly incorporated citrine hues that are ineffably balanced by a range of light to mid-toned blues and sea greens. A lyrical rendition of the Shah Abbas palmette border supports this rug's wonderfully balanced yet improvisational ethos, where every element is a new variation on the theme. At once naive and expertly conceptualized, this turn-of-the-20th-century Bakhtiari is extremely original and perennially charming. In a very rare 6' x 8' size and with such an original presentation, it provides many possible possibilities for use in the home. The artfully syncopated, strikingly grand scale border alternates saffron and watermelon-hued blossoms between delightfully squared blossom lattices--the ideal structure to contain the joyfully freeform activity of the soft ivory interior within. Color is expertly wielded throughout: note how the prussian blue and teal accent tones are interwoven in surprising ways in each compositional zone.
