A precursor to Kashan carpets, officially termed "Mohtasham," this gem is one of the earliest examples of this floral drawing style. During the early 19th century, a prevailing aesthetic arose in Persia and Azerbaijan that favored delicate colors--a challenge to dye so that they remained stable--but which created utterly ethereal carpets, such as this eminently luxurious and beguiling Mohtasham piece. The Bijar rendition of the Garden theme is highly regarded by collectors and, unfortunately, extremely rare to find. This room-size carpet depicts a spacious arboreal celebration against a highly prized undyed camelhair field. Numerous emanating conifers, narrow cypress trees, and angular weeping willows are presented in an orderly, unwaveringly stylized forest. Each is individually conceived and carefully rendered. The weaving of Persian silk rugs in the 19th century replicated on a smaller scale the process developed in the Safavid workshops in the 16th-17th centuries to create carpets with curvilinear lines for the first time in the history of rug weaving. Traditionally, designers drew stunningly elaborate, usually symmetrical medallion and directional patterns that were then overlaid onto a grid, called a cartoon" that showed a knot-by-knot depiction of the rug for the weavers to follow. Woven in the rugged mountains of Northwest Persia before 1910, Serapi carpets are a distinct Heriz region style, with finer knotting and more large-scale, spaciously placed designs compared to other weavings from this area. These artisans successfully synthesized design elements from both the neighboring Caucasian tribal weaving traditions to the north and the elegant court carpets from the city of Tabriz to the east. The "handle" of this antique Ferahn (i.e., the pliability of the textile when squeezed in the palm of the hand) is referred to as "like a handkerchief." This suppleness, along with its exceptionally dense weave, is characteristic of early 19th century work from this region, as we conjecture the descendants of the Safavid workshops populated this area after the dynasty collapsed.
