We see here the most famous and recognizable of all Isfahan designs, the Eslimi spiraling arabesques that twirl so musically around the medallion. What catches both the eye and breath is the alluring turquoise blue which is inspired by and woven in homage to the city’s rich architectural history best symbolized by the blue capped domes and minarets from the Seljuk and Safavid periods. The tonality of the blue here, however, is different from later Isfahan carpet blues. It has an aura, a depth that invite the viewer in to an azure sea and loses them in its waves. The abrashed field adds to the allure and mystique and is far from flat or tepid as other blues may end up looking. This is due to the formidable vegetable dyes used in this carpet. I really love this old Kashan. It has a fabulous design, rich and lush with Garden of Eden imagery, with attractive coloration reliant on neutral earthy tones. The size is very handy and useful, and the condition is perfect. It’s signed by the master weaver in each of the 4 corners. This directional style may well be my favourite of all Kashan styles. One of my personal favourite discoveries of the year is one of the most classical of all rugs in my collection. A mint condition and first generation Kork Kashan woven with lustrous lambswool and glowing vegetable dyes. Yes, it’s classical to the point of being a textbook example of a fine Persian carpet. But that would be missing the point. This is one of the OG’s, a prime influencer copied by hundreds of thousands of other rugs in the century that followed it. And it brings amazing pleasure and packs tremendous value. The quality of materials and weave is stunning. Velvet. The radiance of the dyes is breathtaking. Especially set against the deeply saturated indigo field. The elegance of design is confident and rich all over. The drawing of the Saz leaves and Lotus flowers is sublime. There’s just so much pleasure and beauty seeping out of this piece of art and history. Like all of my gallery collection, it’s part of the 10 year anniversary sale. Antique Khamseh bird rugs are among my tribal favourites. They’re fun, they’re quirky, and they’re always unpredictably full of surprises and indelible charm. Like this. Most are either small sized or long and narrow. This is only the second 3 x 2 meter one I’ve had (the other sold last year and is in a beautiful north California home). It’s the ideal size in my opinion, perfect for interiors and with the most sought after proportions. It’s also the rarest and hardest to find.
