KORK KASHAN BY SAFAZADEH, dated 1300 Grand Master Safazadeh was arguably the most talented carpet designer and producer in old Kashan, second only to the legendary Mohammad Dabir Al Sanaye. This is a most excellent creation of his, glorious in its saturated natural dyes and attractive with its beautifully drawn motifs. A confident medallion is surrounded by curling saz leaves, blooming lotus flowers, and all manner of paradisal garden imagery. You won’t find a better example in the marketplace. I know I haven’t in over two decades. Ultra fine antique pair of Kork Kashan from another dimension of finesse and quality. You’ve all seen many of type but this duo really astonished me. They fold like melting butter. The quality of the dyes is also superb. Note how varied they are and how rich. The greens are a standout that we rarely encounter; I count 3 distinct tones of green as of blue. This range of dyeing and the attention to detail make this pair truly impressive and one (or 2?) of a kind. The pattern is glorious too: landscape cartouches, flowering Goldani vases, elegant Mehrab prayer niches, and Golestan Millefleurs roses all over. Back from the Carpet Spa, its first visit in over 30 years! I posted this wonderful antique Kork Kashan (14 sqm, circa 1925) a couple weeks ago. My dad bought it in the 1990s and since then it’s been lounging in our stores, so I figured I’d send it for a bath and not its back with a glow. And now it’s ready to go to a new forever home. Any suitors?

The Khans or chiefs of the Bakhtiari tribe were the most powerful and richest feudal lords in Persia in the period 1900-1920. They funneled their wealth into some of the country’s foremost carpet workshops and commissioned a number of ultra fine masterpieces for their mansions and estates. This marvelous beauty was commissioned by the tribal chief Agha Morteza Qoli Khan in the year 1325. The knot count is remarkably high, for a tribal rug or otherwise. The real star of the show are the incredible dye materials especially the saffron yellow and apricot. 225 x 135 Dated 1325 = 1907

They usually come in either dozar or kelleh formats. This makes the present size very demanded, in addition to its functional appeal. It retains a tribal, rustic charm. Note the grinning girls and the stylised peacocks. The boteh motifs float like seahorses in the midnight blue sea. Glorious condition, extant end kilim. All original. 324 x 216 Cm Dated 1310 (1892) or 1320 (1902)

MANCHESTER KASHAN PARADISE GARDEN For Persian carpet lovers this is pure magic. It is a stellar example from the golden age of ‘Manchester’ Kashan weaving at the turn of the century when enterprising merchants in Kashan imported finely spun wool from the textile mills of Victorian Britain that was intended for weaving the finest cloaks and robes and instead used it in their carpet workshops. As a result no carpets in the world—apart from the Pashmina wonders of 17th century Mughal India—have a shinier and softer pile than these Manchester Kashan masterpieces. Most of them obviously are of small size and the vast majority of this limited group are of traditional medallion design. Hence the unbelievable attraction of this room size landscape stunner. The lush woodlands and forests, the dense foliage of the trees and the flowers, the allure of the natural world on majestic display. Factor in the truly unreal color combination of creamy field with pinkish border with dollops of soft blue. As good as it gets, this carpet is. 350 x 256 Circa 1900
