Farahan silk rugs from the 1800s are rarer than their Kashan or Tabriz counterparts. Within this exclusive group we tend to find far more ghaliche rugs averaging 2 meters length than the smaller zaronim format of 1.5 meters length. The finesse of weave is quite impressive and the golden coloration rather unusual. It glistens like a sheet of metal. 141 x 115 Circa 1860

Monday morning with a marvel of a Mishan Malayer. I love Malayers. The exciting range of designs, the attractive dye materials, the firm yet soft nature of their weave.. I find they combine the best of all worlds, the finesse of professional workshop carpets and the charm and spontaneity of tribal rugs. In this case, we add a vital element of rarity and that is the very desirable size. Usually for such a length of 3.5 meters the width would not go beyond 1.8 meters yet in this case we have a very harmonious width of 2.6 meters. Sublime. The all over boteh field allows it to fit in easily in any setting. AN IMPORTANT QAJAR TABRIZ We have been fortunate in assembling a first rate collection of Qajar period masterpieces signed and owned by members of the royal family and aristocracy. This is a highlight of the Hajji Jalili school of the late 1800s, that specialised in large decorative carpets with medium knotting qualities. It defies norms with its small qaliche size and excessively fine knot count. The camel tones apricot field bursts alive with a stunning take on the Millefleurs design popular on royal Tehran rugs, combining the beautifully drawn cypress trees with the flowering vase and mehrab niche. The carpet bears a lengthy inscription which explains its role as a ceremonial gift, almost certainly to the Shah or a member of his immediate family: Commissioned by order of His Excellency the exalted Nasrallah Khan, Naqqash Bashi (chief painter to court). Above is a smaller inscription saying Mobarak Bad or congratulations. Evidently this was a (possibly Nowruz new year) gift created two years ahead by the painter laureate to gift to his sovereign.

The First Harshang Bakhshayesh Published by Herrmann in Seltene Orientteppiche IV in 1982, this is one of the all time Bakhshayesh greats. It dates to the early 19th century and is a unique artwork for various reasons: 1. The saffron yellow tonality. 2. The Harshang design, one of the most vibrant and collectible styles of the 18th century. 3. The exciting range of vegetable dyes, including various shades of blue, pink and green. 4. The all wool foundation. 5. The uncommon size.
