On the shortlist of the most prized, hardest-to-find tribal rugs of Southern Persia are those from the Kashkuli sub-tribe of the Qashqai woven during the 1800s. Its immaculately rendered column of triple diamond medallions present uniquely stylized ‘tamgas,’ emblems that serve as identifiers for particular Eurasian tribes. Tribal elders have told us that these symbols of the Qashqai Confederation are evocative of the nomadic hearth, where the trials and travails of the day would be shared among the group.
