Best of the best Sold in 2021 9' 4" x 10' 11" 284cm x 333cm Circa 1875 (High-Collectible) This masterful example of 19th-century Persian city workshop weaving bears the trademark elements of the acclaimed carpet maker Hadji Baba Ganjeh. This noteworthy rug designer, who first started in the city of Kirman and eventually settled in Tabriz, is renowned for his fine artistic rendering and skilled use of only a handful of unique chromatic tonalities, notably his spectrum of mulberry reds. Here, the field displays the classic central medallion and corner piece format revealing Ganjeh’s legendary delicacy of the drawing and execution that is nothing short of breath-taking. On exhibit is a mind-bending dimensionality where individual vine strands appear to be interweaving on different levels. The lobed centerpiece, mirrored in each corner, is an elegant parchment-toned medallion fashioned with striking, finely etched filigree and an inner teardrop motif filled with an astonishing, singular turquoise dye that also adorns the spandrel divisions and predominates in the main border.
