A tremendously expressive phalanx of angular crimson cloudbands, heralding the vapor-covered mythical dragon, assemble in clearly defined order within an elongated hendecagonal medallion "tethered" by diagonal chains of tiny checkered squares on an ember red reserve. The natural dyestuff used as the medallion's base color displays a virtuoso diaphanous abrash treatment of delicate celadon to sea green and would have been an extremely precious commodity. Here, in this exceptionally singular piece, it is used in abundance. Four interconnected spandrels contain curvilinear rose-hued cloudband dragons with integrated ivory phoenix 'heads' upon a famed Entirely cosmological in its depiction of the fabled 'Dragon and Phoenix' compositional motif, one-of-a-kind Bakshaish masterpiece encapsulates in a striking work of art humankind's quest to make sense of their world and origins bringing a sense of order to often chaotic circumstances. 8' 2" x 11' 1" 249cm x 338cm 3rd Quarter, 19th Century ("Gold Coasts Collection")
