200 years old - KASHAN SILK & MEDALLIC PERSIAN RUG! This magnificent early piece from the Kashan weaving tradition of employing both silk and metallic threads bears evidence of a luminary master at work, blending pictorial and medallion carpet styles with seemingly imaginative ease.The weaving beautifully balances both bold artistic statements and subtle nuances. At first glance, the carmine medallion takes center stage, filled with finely drawn floral motifs and birds, and ensconced within multiple blossom-filled surrounds. Soon, the pictorial elements come into view, including sailing ships crewed by a man playing a flute, a sailor tending to the sails, and other dignitaries. There also appear to be men swimming in the azure water accompanied by numerous jumping fish. At either end of the field, along the central axis, appear pairs of benign-looking sea serpents, the harbingers of great wisdom. The weaving’s designer successfully employed serrated vinery and outlining througho 6' 7" x 9' 3" 201cm x 282cm 1st Half, 19th Century
