The antique Persian carpet style known as Mohtasham Kashan honors the memory of the 19th-century master weaver Hadji Hassan Mohtasham who was, in turn, a descendant - and namesake - of a revered 16th-century Persian poet. These exemplary urban workshop weavings share several distinctions, including extraordinarily tightly spun foundations, needle-wrapped edges, and a mind-boggling display of uber-precise detail. Here, the weavers have unveiled a totally ambitious, outside the box marriage of angular diamonds with the refined floral displays that are far more typical of the Mohtasham legacy. The centerpiece consists of colorful nested diamonds emanating from a single inner diamond enclosing a single flowerhead. This design is usually seen in the Qashqai and Khamseh tribal weavings and is referred to as the “cane” motif.
